Cricket E-Blast 1-20-14

For Starters…
Hi everyone!  Let's hope the weather has settled in a bit.  Congratulations to those wrapping up semester courses with their students.  I hope the new semester brings a renewed sense of energy!  Good luck in the transition.

Elementary Staff...
2 Weeks at a Glance:
  • Monday, January 20th-School Board Meeting
  • Wednesday January 22-Friday January 24th-Joe Out
  • Thursday, January 23rd-PBIS Tier 2
  • Monday, January 27th-Happy Birthday Bryan Holman!
  • Wednesday, January 28th-Happy Birthday Katie Borreson!
What's Hoppening:
  • We plan to use similar times Night 1 and Night 2 for our conferences...I'm sure there will be adjustments, but let's start there.  I will touch base with Marcy today to get the process started.
  • If you were unable to schedule a meeting regarding your mid year review this week don't worry.  We will connect in the next 2 weeks.
  • I will be out of the building from Wednesday-Friday at the State Education Convention. Follow the #wasb2014 hash tag on Twitter for some of the sessions.  This is a really solid conference for district administrators and school board members...always good things to take away.  I am presenting School District Branding on Wednesday and we will present our Growth Model on Thursday. Should be well worth the time.  Brad will be the contact for the week.

  • Last week a 4K student said to me... "It's weird that you have none hair".  This week she returns from suspension.

What's Hoppening?

  • We hope Friday was a good chance to review your data and plan accordingly for the 2nd half of the year.  Growth will only happen if you are reviewing and planning moving forward.  We truly appreciate the time and effort that goes into the process.
  • If you have an activity going on in your classroom or area that you would like us to highlight, please shoot us an email or give a call.  We really want to get the word out about the great things happening in the building.
  • This week we will be presenting our Professional Growth Model at the State Education Convention in Milwaukee.  It is such a great feeling to share the work you have all done...we are very proud of where we are, but know it is a model that can grow.  Thank you for your work in this area.  Thank you to Dave Ross and Jessica White who will be part of the presentation team.  I'm sure we will be tweeting from the event...great to get the word out!
  • Our referendum Tier 1 projects are close to complete with some adjustments to the heating/cooling system.  Any remaining dollars will be used to address Tier 2 needs.  If you recall the initial building assessment identified $11.2M in building needs.  We addressed $5.1M of those needs.  Still more to do...but it is important to be fiscally responsible with the taxpayer dollar.  That has been the message from the beginning and will continue to be as we move forward.
  • Registration for EdCamp Eau Claire opens this Friday at noon.  This is not a district initiative but I am on the planning committee so I thought I would let you know.  The date is April 12th and it will be held at the new Education building at UWEC.  EdCamp PD has been really beneficial from my perspective...you get people to a location who want to grow and they devise the agenda for the day.  We are capping the event at 300 people so registration will close pretty quickly.  The day can clearly be used at part of our point system as well.

Go Crickets E-Blast 1-2-14

For Starters…
Happy New Year Everyone!!  In an effort to stop confusing our Elementary Staff with multiple blog posts I am going to attempt to combine District and Elementary communications.  So...some of the info will be just for the Elementary group and some will be for all.  Hopefully this will help with the process...the links, articles, videos, blog posts, and podcasts are usually applicable to all so feel free to dive into those to help with any of the personal learning you would like to do in 2014.

Elementary Staff...
2 Weeks at a Glance:
  • Monday, January 6th-Happy Birthday Brian McCann!
  • Monday, January 6th-BLT 3:15
  • Wednesday, January 8th-All Staff Meeting 3:15
  • Friday, January 10th-Happy Birthday Deb Burfield!
  • Friday, January 10th-Joe Out CESA 8:00-1:00
  • Friday, January 10th-All School Meeting 2:25
  • Wednesday, January 15th-Joe Out UWEC Civic Leaders Meeting 8:00-11:00
  • Thursday, January 16th-All Student Meeting-Staff Collaboration 1:30-3:00
What's Hoppening:
  • Due to the number of evening events scheduled throughout January and February we are going to try something new with conferences.  PT conferences will be scheduled for February 3rd and 10th.  These are Mondays...if it is a bust with staff or parents we can go back to the Th/Tues.
  • Please start to schedule classroom visits for January.  The week of the 20th is out as I will be at the WASDA/WASBO convention for the majority of the week.  If we have to spill into February that works for me.  Also...if you want to connect with your grade level and schedule all 3 classrooms at the same time so you can have additional collaboration, that works for me.
  • I believe everyone has been through their first formal observation.  If you did not receive any documentation of the observation, let me know.
  • The work done on the floors over break looks good.  The K-1 wing was done.  The 2nd grade hallway and the upper level will be done later...probably during summer.

  • Student talking to his friend about Mr. LaPoint... "You know how when sharks smell blood, they rush to the blood?  That's like Mr. LaPoint...it's like, if someone is getting in trouble...you turn around...and BAM! There he is...no warning at all.  It's weird...but good, I guess"
For the District...
What's Hoppening?
Welcome back, everyone!  Hope you all had a wonderful break.  A few things to keep in mind as we get back into the swing of things:

  • Due to the number of evening events scheduled throughout January and February we are going to try something new with conferences.  PT conferences will be scheduled for February 3rd and 10th.  These are Mondays...if it is a bust with staff or parents we can go back to the Th/Tues.
  • At this point in the year you should have some evidence collected for your growth goal.  Our January 17th Staff Development Day is a work day for everyone.  Please remember that you need to schedule a mid year meeting with your administrator.  At this meeting you can provide some insight into where you have come and where you are going.  Your data may indicate that you need to adjust your goal.
  • We will still be using student evals at the end of the semester at the MS and HS level, but are looking at the best way to make those productive.
  • Our admin team continues to get more comfortable with the evaluation tool that the state will be using next year.  I try to keep up with the changes to the model so you will be ahead of the process.  At this point, it appears that the state will be looking at 2 goals.  We are already there.  If that changes, we will let you know.
